Driving in Morocco: rules, licence, tolls and practical tips
Driving in Morocco is easy and enjoyable once you know a few rules and local habits.

The basics
- Drive on the right, like in continental Europe and North America.
- Usual limits: 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on roads, 120 km/h on motorways (unless signed).
- Seat belts are compulsory front and back.
- No phone while driving unless hands-free.
- Alcohol: practically zero tolerance — do not drink and drive.
Your driving licence
A valid foreign licence lets you drive during a tourist stay. An international driving permit is recommended, especially if your licence is not in Latin script. Always carry your licence, passport and the car papers.
Motorways and tolls
Motorways link Marrakech with Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier and Agadir among others. Tolls are paid in cash or by card at the barriers. Motorways are the fastest and most comfortable option for long distances.
Police checks and speed cameras
Police checks and speed cameras are common, especially at town entrances. Keep to the limits and slow down at roundabouts and checkpoints.
Our tips
- In the medina, park in a guarded car park.
- On mountain roads (Atlas), drive in daylight and allow extra time.
- Fill up at major stations before long drives.
- Keep some change for tolls and parking attendants.
